OpenAI Moves to Acquire AI Coding Tool Windsurf in $3 Billion Deal
OpenAI to acquire AI-powered coding platform Windsurf for approximately $3 billion. However, the acquisition date is yet to be announced.
Windsurf, formerly known as Codeium, has been a rising player as an AI coding platform. It had recently been in discussions with investors, including General Catalyst and Kleiner Perkins, to secure funding at the same valuation. Last August, the company was valued at $1.25 billion following a $150 million funding round led by General Catalyst.

The acquisition aligns with OpenAI’s strategy to enhance ChatGPT’s coding capabilities. With each new model release, OpenAI has been refining ChatGPT’s code generation capabilities. This move will likely help OpenAI stay ahead by integrating Windsurf’s technology into its chatbot.
Additionally, OpenAI is preparing for a new funding round, aiming to raise up to $40 billion at a valuation of $300 billion, with SoftBank Group expected to lead the investment.
Neither OpenAI nor Windsurf has publicly commented on the deal. However, if the acquisition goes through, it could reshape AI-assisted coding and make OpenAI’s position viable as a leader in AI coding.
